As an original songwriter based in the South Jersey, Bucks County, and Philadelphia region for the past 30+ years, I’ve dedicated myself to crafting songs that are personal, authentic, and meaningful. But in the local live music scene, originality doesn’t always get the spotlight. Instead, cover bands and tribute acts dominate the stages at most of the area’s venues. While these bands musicians may be talented and provide a numbing familiar experience for audiences, their popularity overshadows the unique voices of authentic songwriters.
The Impact of Cover and Tribute Bands on Local Songwriters
In South Jersey, Bucks County, and Philadelphia, many venues and booking agents prioritize cover and tribute bands because they’re a safe bet. These acts play at venues with have the good stages, lights and most importantly – THE CROWDS. The bands themselves do not provide the draw and the patrons know exactly what to expect—classic hits, familiar songs. For many venue owners, this approach makes financial sense but is not authentic and are frowned upon from the songwriter community.
What’s frustrating is that many of the patrons who visit these venues don’t even realize they’re missing out on something more and supporting the most un-authentic musical experiences possible. The repetition of cover songs creates a comfort zone, but it also means that fresh, original music often gets pushed aside. The non-suspecting listener is treated to the same well-known tunes instead of the opportunity to discover something new and different.
Venues and booking agents often play it safe by catering to these acts, which leads to a stagnant scene (“I don’t see it ever turning around”). It’s even harder for songwriters with original material in South Jersey, Bucks and Burlington Counties to break through and find opportunities to perform, even though we’re offering something personal, real, and directly from the heart.
The Heart of a Songwriter
As someone deeply passionate about songwriting, this situation is disheartening, but it’s also a source of motivation. Writing original music is not just about crafting catchy melodies—it’s about storytelling, vulnerability, and connection. When I write, I pour my experiences and emotions into each song, and every performance is a chance to share that with others.

One of my recent singles, “The Songwriters Song,” speaks to this exact struggle. It’s a tribute to all the songwriters out there who continue to push through the noise, determined to share their original work in a world that often prefers the safe, familiar sounds of cover bands. “The Songwriters Song” is a reminder to keep going, even when it feels like the odds are stacked against us. It’s for the artists who stay true to their craft, knowing that eventually, the right audience will hear and appreciate their work. That is why I get the opportunity to talk freely on this and write this post.
Why Original Music Matters
In regions like South Jersey, Bucks County, and Philadelphia, there’s a rich history of music, and that’s why it’s so important to keep the tradition of original songwriting alive. Original music has the power to create a deep, emotional connection with listeners. When someone hears a new song for the first time and it speaks to them in a way they didn’t expect, that’s the magic of originality.
Cover bands can’t replicate that. They bring nostalgia and live in the past, but they don’t offer the raw, new experiences that original songs do. Original music is about discovering something you’ve never heard before—music that reflects the songwriter’s life, emotions, and stories. It’s something genuine and real.
That’s why I remain focused on writing and performing my own songs, despite the dominance of cover and tribute bands in our local scene. I believe authenticity still matters, and I know there are people out there who are searching for music that offers more than the familiar tunes they’ve heard a thousand times before.
Looking Ahead
Even though venues and booking agents in South Jersey, Bucks County, and Philadelphia may prefer to stick with what’s safe, I know there’s an audience for original music. There are people out there who crave something different—songs that speak to them on a deeper level. As I continue to release original music like “The Songwriters Song,” I hope more people will discover the value of supporting local songwriters and the venues that showcase them.
To my fellow songwriters, especially those in this area—don’t give up. Keep writing, keep performing, and keep believing in the power of your original music. We need to continue pushing for more opportunities to share our songs with the world. And to the local booking agents and venue owners, I urge you to take a chance on something new. You might be surprised by how much your patrons will appreciate hearing fresh, original music.
